Calming An Anxious Cat

May 15, 2017 By admin

No one likes to see their favorite feline friend constantly scared and anxious in their home. While it’s natural for cats to feel initially uneasy in a new environment or around new people, they should eventually come out of their shell and become comfortable. However, if you feel like your kitty is overly skittish and constantly on edge, then you may have a nervous cat on your hands. Not to worry! This isn’t as uncommon as it sounds, and we’ve got some tips to help you and your cat get to a better, and way more fun, place for the both of you!

If your cat scurries away from you or your guests, it’s important to not force them out of hiding. By doing this, it’s likely that you will scare your cat more and increase his anxiety levels. Instead, when he comes out, encourage a structured playtime with you or your guest and his favorite toys. Don’t take it overboard; but by associating the new guest with something fun, like playing, it will eventually show your cat that new people aren’t so scary.

Using rewards and treats when your cat plays or enters a new territory may also help to increase their confidence levels. However, it’s important to make sure you’re not encouraging the behavior by giving treats when they’re in hiding or acting anxious. Surely comfort them if you see they’re overly nervous and paranoid, but show them that by embracing their environment and new people they will be rewarded AND given recognition.

If you find your cat likes to hide in small places throughout your house, create an environment in their play areas that mimic these spots, but are out in the open. For example, cat trees are a great way for your cat to learn to socialize while also having a place of comfort and safety.
